Mahakala’s purpose is to help in overcoming negative obstacles on the path to enlightenment, and protecting that path of righteousness (also known as “dharma”) from hindrances. Like a gargoyle, the mask of Mahakala is also meant to scare bad spirits and energy away from the place it protects.
